University Themed DIY Cornhole Game

This is a sponsored post by Homeright. All opinions are 100% my own.

This past year has been filled with a lot of excitement for our family. Our oldest son spent the year looking for and applying to universities and after a few visits and lots of prayers, he decided that Baylor University in Waco, Texas felt like home to him. After our visit to the Baylor campus, we did what any Fixer Upper fan would do and we hit the Magnolia Market and Silos {in case you want to go, here are 5 things you need to know before your Magnolia Market visit} and while the store was filled with eye candy, we ended up having the most fun, just hanging out playing cornhole on the lawn.

I happened to mention to Aidan that if he decided to go to Baylor, I would make him a cornhole game for his graduation party, since cornhole seems to have not hit it's popularity out in our parts of the world just yet.

So a few weeks before his party, my husband and I got started on making a DIY cornhole game board for his graduation party complete with university logo and handmade university colored bean bags. I've got a few tips for you if you want to make your own cornhole game as well.

There are a lot of building plans for a cornhole game. My husband used these plans to create ours and I think they turned out great. He's a pretty handy guy, and it took him around three hours, start to finish to create the boards.

After the boards were complete, he removed the legs and I set up my Homeright Spray Shelter. In typical Pacific Northwest form, we had rain for days and while I could have painted them outside, I find that having this spray shelter is beyond helpful for all of my DIY needs because lets be honest, I can't rely on the weather when I have a project to complete. I have been caught in the rain and struggling to get a project that's drying out of the elements before it's ruined all of my hard work more times than I would like to count, so this spray shelter is almost always a lifesaver.

It sets up in minutes and all you have to do is throw a tarp on the floor to protect your work surface.

I started by spraying a light coat of green spray paint on the board. I needed two coats, so I let them dry between coats.

While they were drying, I went inside and worked on creating the logo on my Silhouette machine. I used gold foil vinyl and cut out the image.

When the boards were dry, I simply peeled the vinyl off the paper backing and added it to the cornhole game. If you want to learn how to use adhesive vinyl like a pro, you can check out this tutorial. The next time I make one of these games, I would actually paint a sealer underneath the area where my logo will go before I place the vinyl and then on top of it as well.  Vinyl likes to have a surface to stick to and it doesn't always stick well to wood.

I also used fabric in the school colors to create 6x6 bean bags filled with 1 pound of seed corn {I had the corn left over from this project}. The first few bean bags I made actually broke after throwing them only a few times. I went back and created new bean bags, this time I used a heavier fabric and I not only sewed the seams closed, I also used a zig zag stitch AND I used my serger. Probably over kill, but I wanted to make sure these would hold up for his party.

We actually didn't really know the official cornhole rules. Like I said, this game hasn't really made it's way out to our coast just yet, though I see it played at lots of tailgating parties and friends backyard BBQ's in the Midwest.  We had to google the rules to find out how to play cornhole.

Your boxes should be 27 feet from each other and each team gets 4 bean bags. You can play with 2 or 4 people.

Instead of trying to explain the rules, I thought I would copy and paste the official rules from CornHole How To.

SCORING AND WINNING:

Scoring is simple. After all bags have been thrown, a bag remaining on the board is worth 1 point. A bag that went in the hole is worth 3 points. Add up how many points you earned and compare them to your opponents. Equal points cancel each other out so that only one team can score per round. For example, if you scored 5 points and your opponent scored 3, you will add 2 points to your overall score and your team will throw first in the next round. If you scored 6 points and your opponent scored 6 as well, there will be no points awarded and whoever threw first in the last round will throw first again. A game is won when a team reaches 21 points with a lead of 2 or more points. The first team to win 2 games wins the match.
Of course, you can play with your own rules. For example, some play with the rule that you must reach 21 exactly. If you go over in points, your score is automatically reduced to 11 and play continues. Another variation is to count every point (no negation of equal points) and see who has the most points at the end of 13 rounds.

Of course, don't feel like you have to follow the rules either. We set our own house rules and still had a great time!

This game is a ton of fun. It's great for all ability levels and all ages and really doesn't have a lot of restrictions for play. It's easy to make and perfect for your next outdoor party! Give it a try if you haven't already.

I know you are going to want to make your own. One of the most helpful parts of creating this game was being able to use the Homeright Spray Shelter. The good people at Homeright are letting me give one away to one of my readers.

Rachel's random ramblings and a little survey check in

Hi friends! It's been awhile since I've done a Rachel's random ramblings post {pretty sure I say that every.single.time}, so I thought I would check in with some random things that are rambling around in my head.
About 6 months ago, my then 16 year old son told me that the only thing he wanted for his birthday was to go to The Gentleman of the Road concert with me. Not his friends, but me. Now, he could have been saying that because none of his friends could afford the steep ticket price and the long weekend away on the other side of the state, but what I heard was I WANT TO SPEND TIME WITH YOU. So, I bought overpriced concert tickets and we had our best time spending the weekend together.

I'm going to brag here for a second {it's my blog, sue me} because, what is important to mention is that Aidan is probably the best drummer I have ever heard in all the days of my whole life. He's ah-mazing. This isn't just my opinion, this is substantiated by pretty much whoever hears this boy play.

Aidan's played on some pretty awesome stages and in front of some pretty big audiences, but he's never actually been to a concert. We pretty much changed that by going to this full on music festival and listening to live musicians for days.  It was great.  And you know what?  I heard some pretty amazing drummers and I still think my kid could drum circles around all of them.

What I love about music festivals is that you get to find new artists you might not have found otherwise. One guy we loved was Jack Garratt.  He's pretty amazing. He's essentially a one man band. It's impressive.

We had a pretty awesome summer. It's been really hard to get back into real life again.

We spent a little more than a week on the Big Island of Hawaii this summer staying Real World style in a house for a family reunion. One of my many talents is that I can sniff out a good beach. It's really an art.  This is one of my favorite pictures from our trip taken on my favorite beach that we named Turtle Town.  My son took it. He actually takes some pretty awesome pictures that often appear on my blog and on my Instagram.

Last night he was complaining that I didn't give him photo cred.  So, here I am, giving him photo cred.  You are welcome Aidan. By the way, I took that awesome pic below when I snuck up on him napping mid day.  Isn't he just precious?

My daughter gave our youngest son this helium filled battery operated RC powered fish {because everyone needs a remote control helium fish} for his birthday. It shockingly only cost 75cents to fill this bad boy up even though it required more helium to float than the house in Up. Thank you Safeway.

This sweet little boy is Austin. He's 3 and last month he made an appearance in my blog on a post that I did. Austin and his family were visiting from California. We don't see them nearly enough, but when we do, we have our best time. Less than two weeks after this picture was taken, Austin was rushed to the ER and diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma in the form of a really quick growing tumor in his head. My heart breaks for this family. Cancer sucks.

This is probably my favoritest clip ever.

My Grandma's name is Gladys and one time when I was in middle school, we were sitting around the table and she told me when she was younger some people used to call her happy bottom.  It took me awhile to get it but once I did, it was the funniest thing I had ever heard before!

While we are talking about loving Jesus but liking to drink a little, I have to make a confession. I probably like watching Drunk History far more than I should. Don't tell my kids.

Speaking of kids. I was telling my 8th grade daughter that I wanted her to try an after school activity this year.  I picked her up after school from the first drama club meeting and as soon as the doors on the van closed she was in tears. She hated it. The irony wasn't lost on me during her dramatic outbust on the way home.

However later she was having a discussion with her dad about after school activities.  Mind you, this child is 4'5" tall and weighs 65 pounds. She's our peanut.

Child: Mom is making me join some after school activity so I'm just going to join the football team.
Dad: You? You are going to join the football team?
Child: Yep. I'm going to be the goalie.

I've been writing Holy Craft for about six years now.  I must confess that for years, I looked at it as a hobby. An outlet for me to share my crafts and life with, but it's turned into much more than that. If you asked me last year what I did as a profession, I would say that I was a stay at home mom, even though I was putting in tons of hours working on my blog. The game changer was going to my first blog conference {SNAP}. There was no shame in having a hobby blog, but I realized I had nothing stopping me from turning my blog into my business.
The glorious part of being a stay at home mom is that your goal is to work yourself out of a job. With my oldest going off to college next year, I am doing just that. All that said, I have made some changes at Holy Craft and have more ideas for change in the future. I would love to have your input and your feedback. Would you mind taking a few minutes out of your time and taking this short 10 question survey? Please be honest with me, but remember, I am human and will be reading each of the responses, so please respond constructively.

The Story of Us- 16 years later

Because I hate Valentine's day and all of the hype that goes into it, my husband and I decided early on in our marriage to celebrate our dating anniversary instead.
We started dating on February 27, 1997 after we met through mutual friends and attended our first sorority/fraternity event together.
Because I was knee deep in my 3rd blogiversary giveaway, I didn't get to take time to share the story of us, but I wanted to give you a little glimpse into what a wonderful husband and partner I have to share my life with.
In celebration of our 10th dating anniversary {6 years ago}, my not very romantic husband {he's an engineer, what can I say?!}, presented me with a very thoughtful book that he called "The Story of Us".
Since then, he's added another 5 years to that book, and while the fairy tale story that he has written to include with the pictures and the book have many {many} inside jokes and include many allusions that most won't get or understand, I will still share it with you, because it's a book that I very much treasure.
So here it is.  The Story of Us, written by my {dreamy} husband.
Hands off.  He's taken!

The story of these years are merely a glimpse into the charmed past of Mike and Rachel, and but a preview of their future together. Their greatest years truly lay ahead of them, and this storyteller eagerly anticipates the day when the opportunity to recount the tale of their coming years arrives.

Isn't that a lovely story?!
It's the story of us.
I look forward to many more chapters!
