We weren't married for long before we became a family of three. We had our oldest son while we were still in college and we jumped right into the family life, never really having time to enjoy just the two of us as a couple. Sometimes in the thick of things with parenting it feels like it lasts forever, but we are in the home stretch now with one of them and it seems like it all happens in the blink of an eye. Pretty soon, it's going to be just the two of us, something that really never was in our marriage. That's why it is so important for us to be able to take the time as a couple to reconnect with each other. Both of us agree, that it's best to do that reconnecting at an all inclusive resort in a tropical location.
Our favorite home based airline {shout out to Alaska Airlines!} started flying their non-stop to Cancun again after taking a several year break and it took us about two point four seconds to book our tickets. Next up was deciding where to stay while we were there. That part I usually leave to my husband. After crowd sourcing on Facebook first of course. Several of our newly married friends had said that they honeymooned at Excellence Playa Mujeres and after comparing some other resorts, that's ultimately where my husband decided to book. It makes precious little difference to me where we stay as long as they have chips and salsa and a beach with a chair.
With the kids in capable hands with the grandparents {thank you so very much for the break!} we were leaving the mountains behind in the morning and hitting the blue Caribbean sea by that afternoon.
The resort was beautiful! White sand beaches, long lazy pools, and beautiful rooms. We started off our evening with room service and champagne and then took some time to see the resort at sunset before heading out to dinner.
Being able to eat and drink whatever you want whenever you want is probably my favorite part of an all inclusive resort. I hate having to think about going out, getting directions or a cab and then wondering if the food is safe or even if we are safe or not. Everything is right there, right when you need it.
We started every morning with a run and on our second day we were treated with finding this fabulous bridge and overlook. We returned every day to this location and enjoyed the view.
I love sitting on the beach sipping a drink and reading a book but sometimes I get a little hot or a little bored or both and need to take a walk. My husband learned this on one of our first trips away and now he looks for resorts that have good beaches for walking. This was the most perfect beach for walking. You could stumble on things like this abandoned boat {three hour tour gone wrong perhaps?} or walk down to the lighthouse on the other end and watch the boats in the harbor.
While any chair will do, I did love that this resort had hammocks hanging above the pool, swinging beach beds, floating rafts and comfortable lounge chairs. And while the resort was full, there wasn't any rush to snag one of the better spots because there didn't seem to be a shortage of places to relax. If you have traveled at all, having enough seating on the beach and by the pool is usually a huge issue...but not this time. I also loved that the resort had several live bands play throughout the day. Some even playing on the beach during the day. I'm a sucker for live music so this was a huge treat.
We had heard of lots of people taking day trips to Isla Mujeres a small island {just 4 miles long} that is just a short ferry ride away. We decided to give it a try for the day. We explored the island from top to bottom in our rented golf cart and had the best time. It was a perfect four hour excursion.
If I had to pick one of my favorite locations on earth, this spot, swinging right here, next to my favorite guy would be one of them.
It was a beautiful trip! We were so thankful to be able to celebrate our 18th anniversary together!
Do you have a favorite spot to vacation? Have you taken the time to travel {just the two of you} on a trip recently?
