Gold painted goose feathers

I find some pretty cool things at garage sales. Sometimes some of the most random things are the things that I have the hardest time passing up.  A few months ago, I picked up a ziploc bag full of goose feathers.  The family had a goose as a pet and apparently he shed.  A lot.  So for $1, I got a whole bag full of some pretty sturdy white feathers and for months they sat in a drawer because I wasn't quite sure what to do with them.

But alas, don't you worry, I came up with a cool use for those goose feathers. I love that I can use them for a few different things and hopefully, it will give you some inspiration to start creating if you happen upon your own bag of feathers at your next garage sale.

My most favorite in all of the lands metallic paint is Deco Art Americana multi surface  paint.  The gold paint is my favorite.  I have found that some cheaper paints just don't give you that shimmer and shine the way that the Deco Art gold paint does.

If you need a refresher, I also used the gold paint to create this turquoise and gold painted bowl.

See how pretty it is?  It just gives you this great coverage and shiny finish.  O.k., back to the feathers. So I took the feathers and a brush and lightly brushed gold paint onto them.  Once the paint dries, the feathers will dry together, so if you want to separate the feathers to give them some dimension like I did, you simply take your brush as you paint them and brush up, the opposite way that the feathers want to go.

Let the feathers dry for about an hour.  Look how pretty they are now!

They look like they came from a golden goose!

Now comes the fun part.  What to do with them.

You could string them to make a garland like Green Wedding Shoes did.

Or you could wrap them into a bow for a unique present idea.

They also would make a great display piece if you mounted them in a shadow box like Lia Griffith did.

The possibilities are endless!  What would you do with painted gold feathers?

Transformation Tuesday painting a desk with metallic paint

Welcome back to another transformation Tuesday! I'm so excited to share with you my latest garage sale find from Friday that has been transformed!

I know I'm not the only one who loves painted furniture. Honey oak anything had it's place and now it's time for paint to save the day.

I had a chance to sample the metallic paint line from Modern Masters and was drawn to Pewter. There are some amazing metallics to choose from, but silver has my heart.

Bet you can't guess which item from my garage sale finds Friday I chose to paint metallic.

O.k., so maybe it wasn't that hard to guess.

Just to refresh your memory, I picked up this secretary desk with drawers for $10 at a garage sale. It was in great shape and good quality, it just isn't a color that I love.

It didn't take me long to transform it into something I do love! Paint is a magical thing!

I don't know if you realize how hard it is to find new hardware that will fit a vintage piece. Remember, I like to do things as thrifty as possible, and usually the best way to do that is to reuse what you have.

Well, what I had were these brass knobs.  Which really, by themselves are quite awesome, but on a pewter desk just wouldn't work anymore.

Seriously all it took was a coat of silver spray paint to take these knobs up a notch.

I was able to use vintage paper to line the drawers and love how it compliments the desk.

I really loved using this metallic paint for this transformation.  I couldn't believe how well it covered and the shine is perfect.  Both subtle and bold depending on the light.

I sort of want to metallic paint all of the things. If you want to jump on the metallic paint bandwagon, you can find a Modern Masters retailer near you or shop their on-line shop.

Transformation Tuesday: Succulents in painted terra cotta pots and cigar boxes

Welcome to the first ever transformation Tuesday here at Holy Craft! I am so excited that you are here today!  If you randomly stumbled upon today's post, here is a little background.

I'm a huge garage saler {yep, it's a word}! I have been going to sales for as long as I remember and nearly every Friday and Saturday you will know where to find me. I just love finding a deal and I have the most fun on the hunt.

However, not everything I find is in tip top shape. Sometimes my finds need a little transformation to get to their fullest potential.  Which is where my new series, transformation Tuesday comes into play. In case you missed the return post of garage sale finds Friday, you can go here and check out my finds because today, I will be taking those finds up a notch and transforming them.  Ready?!

Inspired by my friend Kari at Life PreKarious, I knew exactly what I was going to make when I saw three plain terra cotta pots at a garage sale for $1.  I loved her DIY gold leaf succulent planter and thought I would do a little variation of that with my favorite gold deco art paint.  I also threw a little turquoise in there too because, well, who doesn't love turquoise right now?  I used the same blue on this memo board I made a few weeks ago.

Once I painted my pots, I planted some of the succulents that I got {at a garage sale!} into the pot. I am jumping hard on that succulent bandwagon.  Mostly because I kill everything my hands touch! Well, except my kids.  So far, so good.

Remember the cigar and barbershop boxes I picked up?  I paid $1 for all of them. Aren't they fun when you put some succulents in them?!
I'm pretty sure you could plant succulents in a trash can and they would look awesome!
Wasn't that fun?!  And the little transformation didn't take long at all!  Sometimes it's hard to think outside of the box, but once you do, you will realize how awesome succulents will look inside the box.  Ha!  See what I did there.
Thanks for joining me!  Stay tuned for more transformation Tuesday's.  I think you are really going to like them!

Unfinished craft frame turned into a custom earring and memo board

I'm slowly making my way through the amazing swag that I received at SNAP conference in April. I had an awesome unfinished frame from Cut It Out and some paint from Folk Art.  Come see what I made when I put a few things I had on hand together.

My 13 year old daughter loves her accessories!  She's a big fan of earrings in particular but finds that they get lost, especially the little ones.  Her collection of small flower buds are too beautiful to not display, so we created double duty for them.  This frame can act like an earring holder or a memo display or both!

I painted the frame in this turquoise blue and once it was dry I used adhesive cork {I always have some on hand because this stuff is the best!} to cover the back.

Now, Isabella has a home for all of her small earrings!  And if she wants, she can pin up any little note using the earrings as a push pin.
