Transformation Tuesday-an updated hamper goes from the 70's to glam with some spray paint

I am so excited about this new summer series called transformation Tuesday, where I take one of the previous weeks garage sale finds from Friday and transform it into something amazing.

This week, all it took was a little spray paint to take a really old 70's looking storage hamper into something really awesome.  Here's a glimpse at what it looked like before.

You won't believe how good the after looks!

Seriously!  For only $1, this plastic dark wood hamper jumped into the next millennium with a coat of spray paint and about ten minutes.

All I did was wipe the hamper down with a wet rag.  I took off the two screws that were holding the lid on and removed the top.

I always have white spray paint on hand because you never know what you are going to need it for. I love this Rust-Oleum satin paint with primer because it works on any surface, even plastic. Check out that nozzle.  It sprays like a dream!

How much better does this storage container look now? Isn't it a great transformation?

I think the most important thing to remember when looking for an item to transform at a garage sale is to pay attention to it's lines.  This one had great lines with that geometric pattern so I knew that it was going to turn out great.  If you can get past the ugly duck first impression, you may end up with something awesome that you love!

Incredibly easy patriotic berry dessert

I don't know about you, but I'm not a big themed food kind of person. Don't get me wrong, I love it when other people embrace the theme or holiday or whatever, it's just not always the first thing I think of.

Last year, I threw this patriotic berry dessert platter together and it was a real hit.  It took less than five minutes to make and was easy to put together when we got to our party.  Today I'm going to show you how I made it.

I started with blueberries, raspberries and yogurt pretzels.  All things I found at my local grocery store.  It isn't rocket science!  It's pretty easy to see the pattern and throw it together.

In under five minutes and without totally breaking the bank, you have this fun patriotic berry dessert that doesn't need to be refrigerated and can easily be snacked on throughout your event.

Easy peasy and totally delicious!

Don't forget to pin this on your Pinterest board! It's too easy and fun not to share!

Garage sale finds Friday + summer camp counselor information you don't want to miss

Welcome to another week of garage sale finds Friday.  Where I share with you some of my favorite garage sale finds from the week.  I had some pretty great finds and scored a collectors item for next to nothing!

Want to see what I got?

I initially walked away from this plastic dark wood hamper, but I was drawn back to it as I walked back to my car.  The lines were pretty awesome and it doubled as storage, which is always a bonus. It was only $1 so I picked it up. Stay tuned for Tuesday when I show you it's transformation!

I love serving wear. Anything white and I stock up! I loved this white plate with the black trim.  Isn't it classy?  It was only a dollar.

Speaking of things for only a dollar, I picked up this vintage Hudson Bay blanket for a buck.  A buck! It's not in prefect shape, in fact the woman I bought it from told me it made a perfect blanket to keep in the back of the car for emergencies {oh boy!} but for a dollar, I couldn't pass it up.  These blankets are very collectible and unbelievably beautiful and durable!

It happens every once in a blue  moon that you can find an item that has the perfect amount of chippiness and patina.  This is that blue moon.  Isn't this bi-fold door fabulous?!  I think it will be perfect for photo backdrops and for use at craft fairs.  For only $3 I snatched it up!

I also picked up this smaller shutter for $1. It might be nice to hang photos on or Christmas cards during the holidays.  Not sure yet.  But it was too cute to pass up!

I had some pretty awesome scores. Several of them are already my favorite things ever. What did you find this week? Did you have any success?
Wait until you see how that plastic hamper looks now!  Don't forget to sign up for our e-mail newsletter {you can find the sign up form right under my cute face on the right side bar} so that you get the latest news delivered right to your inbox.  Transformation Tuesday is coming! Easy four ingredient guacamole you can make in your food processor

On Monday, I shared with you our new summer go to recipe, chicken burrito bowls.
Everything was microwaveable and didn't heat up the kitchen. We topped those burrito bowls with some yummy guacamole and I want to share with you my easy homemade guacamole recipe.
You will need:
2 avocados, juice from half of a freshly squeezed lemon {about 2 TBSP}, 2 TBSP chopped onion, 1/2 tsp salt

I use my mini-prep food processor and blend all of the ingredients together.

It's as easy as that!

One little tip to keep your guacamole from browning is to put the pit of one of your avocado's into your guac.  You don't have to serve it like this, but if you have any leftover {it's rare, but it happens!} and you want to store it, this is a great way to come back to green {not brown} guacamole the next day.

This guacamole recipe is a great base for more advanced recipes.  You can add some tomato, garlic, cilantro, jalapeno, cayenne pepper, ground cumin, you name it!  Just start with the basics and add the extras to fit your mood.

It's a delicious dip for chips, a great topping for Mexican night or on a sandwich.  Or you can eat it by the spoonful. It's just that delicious!

Easy {microwaveable} chicken burrito bowl

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group®, Birds Eye®, and Tyson® but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #FastFreshFilling http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

I am always looking for healthy easy meal ideas for my family of five, but I rarely find one that is as much of a crowd pleaser as these chicken burrito bowls were.  These were a major hit for me because I could cook everything in the microwave and I didn't have to heat up my kitchen.

You see, I live in the greater Seattle area and while the summer is a gorgeous time to be around our city, it can also be pretty darn hot.  Less than 1% of the homes in the Pacific Northwest have air conditioning because we just don't need it.  Most of us learn to cook without heating our houses during the summer, because let's face it, when it's 85 degrees INSIDE your house, the last thing you want to do is turn on the oven!

Summer is a busy time for everyone.  I know I would rather be outside playing than inside cooking.  I can't wait to share with you my unbelievably easy, healthy and full of protein chicken burrito bowls that can be made totally in your microwave!  How darn convenient is that?!

A good summer meal is always accompanied by something that was grown in the garden.  We have had a bounty of spinach and lettuce this summer that has been delicious!  While I was out in the garden I also chopped off some cilantro.  I wish my tomatoes were ready.

I shopped at my local WalMart and picked up Tyson grilled and ready chicken breast fillets, Birds Eye protein blends Southwestern Style {with protein added...great for this mama who just ran a half marathon and for my swimmer son...and filling for the growing teens in my family!}, avocado, lime and tomato.  You can also pick up sour cream as a topping.

I chopped up my lettuce and made my families favorite guacamole recipe {check back on Wednesday for the recipe}.

Here is everything I had on hand to get this whole meal thrown together.  In under ten minutes, the meal was cooked and ready for the table.  I call that an easy meal idea don't you?

While the chicken breasts were cooking in the microwave, I put down a layer of chopped lettuce on my plate. While the chicken cooled, I cooked the Southwestern Style mix.

I layered the mix on top of my bed of lettuce.  No seasonings needed!  It's already packed with flavor and smells amazing!

I cubed the chicken {and snuck a bite...man, it tasted like it had come off of the grill!}.  It's 100% all natural white meat, so it cut nicely and tasted amazing!

I layered on tomatoes, cilantro, guacamole and sour cream before I squeezed on some lime juice.

Oh my goodness!  This was amazing!  It's my new summer go to recipe.  Not only is it fast and easy, it's healthy and filling.  Major bonus that it doesn't heat up my kitchen.

The kids decided they wanted theirs inside of a burrito.  I love how versatile this meal is!  Slap some guacamole and sour cream down, layer your Southwestern style protein blends and cube some chicken and you are in business!

Yum!

WalMart has everything you need to make this meal. I promise you, you will love this as much as our family did.  It was so easy and unbelievably tasty!  So tasty, that my husband was still talking about it the next night!

Go pick some up!  You won't be disappointed.  Give it a try tonight!  Don't forget to check back on Wednesday for my homemade guacamole recipe.

Garage sale finds Friday

Welcome to another week of garage sale finds Friday, where I share with you my favorite garage sale finds from the week.  I found some great stuff!  Most of it is vintage and awesome! Are you ready to see?
I'm not quite sure what I am going to do with this vintage violin, but I saw the case and was instantly drawn to it.  The violin is very old but is pretty much beyond repair. I'm thinking that I might spray paint it and hang it up as art, but I'm not sure yet.  And then, what do I do with the super awesome case?  For $4 I'm going to keep thinking. I'm sure to come up with something!

I bought this box of vintage jars for $5. I've picked up jars like this for past projects and made things like this and this. I don't have any current plans for these right now, but I'm pretty sure I can find something to do with them.

We don't have AC so we have our windows open and our doors propped most of the summer.  I love using vintage shoemaker's tools like this wooden shoe form. I picked it up for $3.

How cool is this vintage medical bag? I love how worn and broken in it is. I paid $5 and think I got a great deal on this leather bag.

Vintage milk crates are my favorite! I have one in my entry that I decorate for the seasons.  In the fall, I put pumpkins in it, in the winter, I put burlap and a small Christmas tree.  Not sure what I will do with these.  Especially the one that is segmented, but I just had to have them for $5 for the pair.

What did you pick up these week?  Do you love vintage finds as much as I do?  Any suggestions on what I should do with the things I'm pondering on? I would love to hear from you!

Don't tell the kids, but you can sneak something educational into their TV time!

I don't pretend to think that my kids are going to be watching less television in the summer. However, I like to hope that they don't fill their minds with hours upon hours of mindless TV watching.

I already know that all that learning they filled in their minds with during the school year will slowly seep out, but if I can do anything about it, I'm hoping to steer them towards some educational TV this summer.

It's easy to do with Netflix.  Want to know what my kids are watching?  You might even learn something too!

I love that I can find a whole slew of documentaries and learning programs on Netflix. Some of my kids favorites that they are watching right now are School House Rock! Earth {I still sing some of the School House Rock songs I learned when I was a kid}, Planet Earth, The Magic School Bus {did you hear Netflix is rebooting this series with some a series of new episodes in 2016.  In the meantime, you can catch all the originals}, The Blue Planet {my youngest son is obsessed!},  Brain Games {our whole family loves this one}, and Bill Nye the Science Guy {one time I kissed Bill Nye on the cheek...I'm sure he still remembers it!}.

I would love to know what some of your families favorite educational shows are.  We have to make sure they don't get dumber during the summer now don't we?!
