My oldest son just turned 13. Eep! He's becoming quite opinionated in what he likes and wants and he sort of jumped on the loft bed bandwagon and wouldn't quit talking about it.
My father in law had built a loft bed for his oldest son back in the early 80's and had it sitting in pieces in his garage for nearly two decades. He offered it up to us. I didn't know what it looked like put together, but I was hoping for the best. Check out the sweet Formica desk top and florescent light.
I set to work painting it a dark blue/black color that my son picked out. There is nothing wrong with oak wood, but in my opinion it's easy to date an object to the 80's with oak, so I wanted to give it a little update with paint. Sophie helped.
I used Krylon plastic spray paint as a primer on top of the Formica before I painted the blue on top. It went on great!
The bed slowly started to go together. Check out the outlets built into the bed post. Now that was thinking!
How many people have auto cad drawings of their furniture? Not many. But if your father in law is an engineer you do!
Here it is all together. See the space underneath for the dresser? My father in law actually made a dresser to fit in the area, but in his kindness had given it away to someone who needed it. I have plans of painting Aidan's current dresser so that it will be more seamless underneath the loft.
Now that Aidan has a loft, he made room for his drum kit. To answer your question, yes, drums are super loud!
As you can see, my guy is quite the musician. He also plays guitar. With them mounted on the wall it provides easy access to play whenever the mood strikes.
The desk underneath the loft has been a great place for this new 8th grader to do his work. My husband put an under cabinet light underneath and it looks much more updated than the florescent one.
Stay tuned. One paint project turned into another. Hopefully I will get to the dresser and bookcase before next June!
That looks really fantastic!! I LOVE it! The idea of putting outlets into the actual piece is genius!
