bathroom face lift

Last week I shared with you our kitchen face lift you can see here . This week, I am going to share with you what we did in the kids bathroom.

This is the before. I HATE linoleum and had been scheming to have it removed the instant we moved in here. Unfortunately, it took over 5 years to get the hubby on board.
Don't you just love the movie star light fixture?! I know a lot of us are dealing with the huge plate glass mirrors. On a whole though, the kids vanity was in good condition. It just needed a little face lift. We had the same granite installed in the bathroom as we had installed in the kitchen, but kept the existing sinks and faucets. The mirror and lighting were removed and some lovely people came and picked them up after they saw our ad on craigslist. No joke, the guy was going to put the mirrors (yes plural, we had the same one on in our master bath) on his ceiling...in his moms house...I'm trying not to think about it.
I did the painting on the vanity. Just used a black paint, then sanded down the edges to distress it a bit. Then my husband put the knobs on. Really, what did builders in the 90's have against knobs and drawer pulls?
We had someone install travertine tile. I have found that if I set time limits for my husband to do household projects and if those projects don't get done in that time frame, the punishment is that I then hire it out. I think sometimes my husband drags his feet on projects just so I will find someone other than him to do them! The travertine was picked up at an auction outlet so we just had to pay for labor.
And here is the after!
The light bar made it easier for my husband to install, so he didn't have to rewire. Not to mention, it cost less than $75 at Lowes! The mirrors were the bain of my existance for a few months as I searched for just the right ones to fit in the space. I honestly can't remember where I found them, but lots of big box stores are now carrying large inexpensive mirrors that will give you the same effect.
Having grown up in the midwest, I am mesmerized with shells and sea creatures. I have lived on the west coast now for 10 years, just minutes from the Puget Sound and can't get enough! I try to keep only my favorites, and in this large glass jar (from a garage sale for $1) I put a few in the bottom to hold the extra toilet paper rolls. And while I am mentioning the toilet paper holder, I would like to also highlight the new moulding my husband installed. I love the wider moulding, and since we had to remove the old moulding to install the tile, he put new wider moulding up. See, he isn't half bad!
And on the counter, more shells. I got the vase from a friend for free (love her!), and it has a hodge podge of shells from our trip to Ocean Shores last summer and a few from a recent trip to Cancun (Mexico is my FAVORITE place!).
