Welcome back to the final day in baby shower week. During the week I have been sharing with you some of the details of the shower but today, I am going to share with you the gift that I gave to my sister in law.
I know you have all seen those cute "monthly" onesies. Such a brilliant idea to show the little peanuts growth through the year. I only wish I had come up with this idea when my kids were little. But I didn't, and I like to make what I love, so I took the idea and made these as a gift for my new baby niece due to arrive in the next few weeks.
You start out with a stack of onesies in various sizes. I had 13 onesies. From 1 week, 1 month, 2 months (etc...) all the way to 12 months. The smallest size was newborn (up to 8 pounds) and the largest was 18 months (my kids were always bigger than their "age" clothing).
I had the other supplies on hand. You need iron on fusible webbing, and I used two different coordinating materials for the circles. You will also need a silhouette machine (or some other method for cutting out the number and letter) and heat transfer paper (mine was white from silhouette).
For the first five onesies I used a smaller template for the circle. The onesies are smaller and needed a smaller circle template. I used what I had. The Starbucks reusable cup lids are good for many things!
For the larger onesies I used the lid from my ziploc containers. Just eyeball the size and see what works for you.
Then I took my lids...I mean my templates, and traced them out on the fusible webbing. The most important step here is making sure you label each one with the month. This will make life easier later I promise!
I then cut out around the circle making a square that I could use to iron on the fabric later.
I did that with each and then sorted the circles out into piles of fabric that I would use for each month. I used green for 1 week, pink for 1 month, green for 2 months, pink for 3 months...you get the idea. Again, labeling them helps in this step.
I then laid the fabric out (print side down!!!) and ironed on the circle to the fabric.
Cut each circle out.
Then I went into the Silhouette software and printed (as a mirror image! So important!!!) the numbers and letters. Remember, you will need to change the font size on the smaller onesies so they will fit on the smaller circle.
Then I printed them out on the new Silhouette heat transfer paper.
I cut out each word and letter and then peeled away the negative space.
Then I laid it out on the onesie to make sure I liked the placement. I followed Silhouette's instructions for the heat transfer paper and used a thin piece of cotton over the lettering as I ironed it on. I made sure that I let the paper cool (making it a stiff piece of plastic almost) and then peeled it away. I did this step first before placing the circle on the onesie. I didn't want to mess up the whole onesie.
See how on this 1 week onesie the "k" didn't stick? I thought it was sort of cute...but I fixed it! Once the lettering was on, I peeled off the fusible web backing and ironed that down onto the onesie. Make sure you use the light piece of cotton on top of the whole thing as you iron it on or the letters will peel off.
I found a box at Michael's and put them all inside for a little keepsake.
Here they are all lined up inside.
Such a fun baby shower gift!

This is awesome, and what a great tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI came over from Flamingo Toes Link up. This is just adorable! I have a baby shower for a cousin coming up and I think this is just the thing! Think it will work without the silhouette (don't have one) and just use the printable iron on paper?
